Mexico’s energy future under discussion: investment, renewables and storage will take centre stage at Energyear México 2026

Mexico’s energy future under discussion: BESS, grids, investment and renewables

The country faces a decisive phase in modernising its power system and expanding its generation capacity. More than 600 industry professionals will gather in Mexico City on 4 and 5 November to discuss the challenges of the energy transition at a new edition of Energyear México.

Mexico City, October 2026. Mexico is at a pivotal moment in defining the future of its power system. Growing demand, the need to attract investment, and infrastructure and regulatory challenges are reshaping the national energy market. Against this backdrop, Energyear México 2026 will bring together representatives of the sector’s leading companies and institutions on 4 and 5 November at the Sheraton Mexico City María Isabel to discuss the industry outlook and the country’s development opportunities.

The event will take place against a backdrop of major changes in Mexico’s electricity market. According to the targets announced by the federal government, Mexico plans to add around 32 GW of new electricity capacity by 2030, approximately 70% of which would come from renewable sources. This expansion will require substantial investment in generation, transmission and distribution networks, as well as new storage solutions to ensure the system’s stability and competitiveness.

New conditions for renewable energy investment

The economic and regulatory conditions for renewable energy project development in Mexico are also undergoing a transformation. The mixed contracts awarded by the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) during 2026 were estimated to range between 40 and 50 dollars per MWh, compared with the 17.77 dollars per MWh recorded in the last long-term electricity auction in 2017.

The difference reflects a change in the contracting model, which now incorporates components such as energy storage, power capacity and more demanding technical and financial requirements. This new landscape places project bankability, regulatory certainty and access to electricity infrastructure among the main factors in attracting capital to the country.

These challenges are compounded by rising energy demand linked to industrial expansion, electrification and the development of data centres and artificial intelligence, which are increasing the need for a reliable and competitive electricity supply.

Storage, regulation and financing at the heart of the debate

With more than 600 attendees, 80 speakers, 100 companies and 15 panel discussions, Energyear México 2026 will address the main challenges facing Mexico’s energy industry over two days. The agenda will include discussions on the future of the energy mix, the development of new solar projects, the evolution of the Wholesale Electricity Market, the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and the need to modernise electricity grids. The impact of the new regulatory framework, the outlook for wind energy and the financing mechanisms needed to accelerate investment will also be examined.

The confirmed leading organisations and speakers include some of the foremost players in the renewable energy sector in Mexico and Latin America, such as Axial Structural, Jinko Solar, Sungrow, Shoals, Nextpower, Power Electronics, Contourglobal, Atlas, Valia, Engie, Yéltica, Genux, Sempra, Cúbico, Gauss, Bancomext, Banco Multiva, MPP and Equinix. They will offer different perspectives on the sector’s technological, financial and regulatory challenges. The event will also facilitate dialogue and networking among developers, manufacturers, investors, financial institutions and other institutions, at a time when collaboration among the various stakeholders will be essential to turn Mexico’s energy goals into viable projects.
