From renewable energy growth to investment viability: Italy faces a decisive moment in its energy transition
More than 1,000 professionals gathered at Energyear Italia in Milan to discuss investment challenges, electricity grid constraints and the growing role of energy storage in Italy’s energy transition.
Madrid, 19 October 2026. The sixth edition of Energyear Italia concluded on 15 October at UNA HOTELS Expo Fiera Milano, bringing together more than 1,000 renewable energy professionals. For the first time, the event expanded to three days, providing a meeting place for developers, investors, electricity companies, technology providers and financial institutions to address the main challenges and opportunities that will shape the evolution of Italy’s energy market.
Throughout the event, discussions highlighted a shared challenge: although Italy continues to attract substantial investment in renewable energy, turning project pipelines into operational assets increasingly depends on regulatory certainty, the availability of grid access and sustainable business models.
Project bankability and grid access remain key challenges
One of the main topics discussed was the growing importance of project bankability in an increasingly competitive market. Rising financing costs, electricity price volatility and pressure on margins are reshaping investment decisions. Developers and financial institutions are paying increasing attention to revenue predictability, construction costs and grid connection timelines.
Industry discussions highlighted that obtaining permits is no longer enough to ensure a project’s viability. Grid constraints, connection uncertainty and the evolving regulatory framework continue to pose significant obstacles to project delivery.
The growing penetration of solar energy has also intensified concerns about price cannibalisation, reinforcing the importance of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), portfolio diversification and hybrid projects combining solar energy and storage. At the same time, advances in solar trackers, agrivoltaics, engineering and digital asset management are helping to improve the sector’s operational efficiency and protect the long-term value of investments.
BESS establish themselves as strategic energy infrastructure
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) took centre stage on the second day, reflecting their growing importance in enabling renewable energy integration, providing grid flexibility and ensuring power system stability.
One of the main areas of focus was Italy’s MACSE, a mechanism designed to accelerate the deployment of large-scale storage through long-term capacity contracts. Following the first auction in 2025, which awarded approximately 10 GWh of capacity, the next round, scheduled for 24 November 2026, will aim to award 16 GWh of storage capacity for operation from 2029.
This new auction marks an important milestone for Italy’s storage market, whose participants are closely monitoring its potential impact on investment decisions, competition and future revenue expectations. Beyond regulated mechanisms, discussions addressed the growing relevance of market-exposed strategies (merchant), tollingagreements, energy arbitrage and ancillary services as complementary revenue sources.
However, industry representatives stressed that regulatory predictability, reliable grid connection timelines and appropriate risk allocation remain essential to securing financing and successfully delivering projects.
Technology and electricity demand will shape the next phase
Technological innovation and changing electricity demand also featured prominently in the event programme. Digitalisation, advanced battery management systems and asset optimisation tools are becoming increasingly important in improving the performance of renewable energy installations and ensuring their long-term operational reliability.
The event also addressed the growing electricity needs of industrial consumers and data centres, as well as the role of corporate PPAs, on-site generation and energy storage in ensuring a reliable and competitive electricity supply.
Against a backdrop of volatile electricity prices and continued dependence on gas, improving energy competitiveness while accelerating decarbonisation remains one of Italy’s main challenges.
Three days of business collaboration and networking
Beyond the conference programme, Energyear Italia 2026 strengthened its role as a meeting point for the renewable energy community through dedicated networking spaces, private business meetings, workshops and exclusive activities for sponsors.
The three-day format expanded opportunities to exchange knowledge, forge strategic partnerships and explore new business opportunities across the entire energy sector value chain.
With more than 1,000 participants, the event concluded an edition that reflected both the momentum of Italy’s energy transition and the importance of collaboration in overcoming the remaining challenges. Energyear Italia will return to Milan from 19 to 21 October 2027.
